Sushi: The Undisputed No.1 in Japanese Cuisine

Many visitors eagerly anticipate enjoying sushi during their trip to Japan.

From conveyor belt sushi to high-end sushi counters, there’s a wide variety to explore. This time, MIMARU staff participated in an activity where they had the chance to make sushi themselves!

Asakusa Sushi Dojo is conveniently located on the 7th floor of the Matsuya Asakusa store (EKIMISE), directly connected to Tobu Asakusa Station.

This establishment is part of the renowned Tsukiji Tama Sushi brand, a historic chain founded in 1924 and known for its legacy at Tsukiji Market.

It’s only a three-minute walk from the MIMARU Asakusa properties

(MIMARU Tokyo Asakusa Station and MIMARU SUITES Tokyo Asakusa),

making it an easy and convenient destination even for those with children.

MIMARU staff took part in the Private Counter Course, an activity perfect for families to enjoy.

The participants this time were two sushi enthusiasts who were fully prepared in their custom chef uniforms!

The Experience Begins

After a thorough handwashing to ensure hygiene, participants were ready to start.

The sushi ingredients are pre-sliced and no fire is used, making it a safe activity even for children (ages 7 and up).

In the Private Counter Course, professional sushi chefs guide participants step-by-step, providing detailed instructions.

The experience is also easy for international guests to enjoy as  English instruction is available!

A Personalized Sushi Experience

Participants prepared popular items such as tuna, salmon, shrimp, and salmon roe, with options to customize based on allergies or preferences.

When booking, mention that you are staying at MIMARU—there might be a special treat for you!

(Please note that this must be mentioned at the time of booking and cannot be applied on the day of the activity.)

Of course, participants can taste the sushi they make. Comparing their creations to those made by the professional chef, the two participants were amazed, saying, “The taste is completely different!”

Extra Fun for Adults

Optional add-ons include all-you-can-drink sake and a knife skills show.

Guests can enjoy pairing sushi with various types of sake or marvel at the sushi chef’s expert knife techniques.

The Private Counter Course also includes tamagoyaki (Japanese omelet), a favorite among children, prepared by the chef.

Memories to Take Home

At the end of the activity, participants receive a Sushi Master certificate and a coaster.

The friendly and fun interaction with the sushi chef makes for unforgettable memories!

Participant Feedback

The sushi-making experience is truly a treasure trove of Japanese culture! Just seeing the fresh fish and colorful ingredients laid out in front of you is exciting, but making sushi yourself doubles the appeal.
I was especially surprised at how easy it was to pick up the techniques thanks to the chef’s clear explanations.
Even though I’m not great at cooking, I quickly managed to make delicious sushi. I couldn’t believe I had made it myself!
The atmosphere in the shop was also fantastic—very homey and relaxing. We shared fun conversations and lots of laughs, making it an enjoyable time filled with smiles.
This is an experience you cannot miss when visiting Asakusa! If you want to not only eat but also learn to make authentic sushi, I highly recommend it.
The chefs and assistants were very kind and explained everything clearly in English.
The sushi itself was incredible—soft and melted in my mouth. Salmon, tuna, shrimp, and more—all so delicious!
If you want to not only try but also learn to make authentic omakase sushi, this is the experience for you.
The staff spoke easy-to-understand English and were very informative. The sushi itself was excellent.
We got to try various types including salmon, tuna, and shrimp. It was all so soft, it practically melted in my mouth.
In all, this is a must-do experience while in Asakusa.
