You might have seen braided cords adorning all kinds of traditional clothing and objects during your travels through Japan.
These cords are made by braiding beautiful dyed silk threads, and are a form of traditional Japanese craft called “kumihimo”.
Kumihimo have been used for various purposes for centuries, but most Japanese people are familiar with it as a decoration for the sash of a kimono, which are traditional Japanese garments.
We are excited to introduce this special workshop where you can experience making your own unique kumihimo using traditional tools.

When we arrived at the museum-like workshop, we were first given an explanation of the history and characteristics of kumihimo, which helped us to deepen our understanding of the craft.
It was surprising to learn that all the silk threads used in the neatly arranged kumihimo were hand-dyed by traditional artisans.
Making the braids seemed really difficult, but the craftsman was very kind and patient. Thanks to his explanation, I was able to make a braid without having to worry.
First, the braiding process was very confusing, but I was able to get the hang of it and proceed smoothly. Once you get the basic steps down, anyone can make kumihimo!
I began to lose myself in my work, and time just flew by.
You can make the braids into wearable bracelets and straps. They make perfect souvenirs of your trip to Japan!
Experience the history of Kumihimo
The experience we are introducing today starts not just with braiding braids but also with learning about their history.
Reconstructions of historical pieces are on display, allowing you to learn about the characteristics of braiding methods and uses throughout the ages.
Braids that were originally used to attach swords on people’s hips were later used to tie around kimono sashes and are now popular accessories.
Learn how kumimono the silk thread have changed to meet the needs of the time period while preserving traditions.
Since the silk thread used for braiding comes in so many different colors, there is no right or wrong way of choosing your materials.
Craftsmen mix many colors and fine-tune the design gradually during the process.
The fun begins by choosing your materials
You can choose your color combination from many pre-prepared ones.
It was exciting to imagine how the finished braid would look, so we were already having fun right at the beginning.
The 12 strands of silk thread are braided in a set order.
The staff will point out any mistakes you make during the process, so there is no need to worry.
You braid rhythmically while enjoying the feel of the silk threads and tools.
The sounds emerging from the working on your braid are very soothing, and I naturally became immersed in the experience.
Finished!
The silk thread gives the cord a shiny look and a smooth feel, while the braided pattern makes it firm and stretchy. Once you have braided it to a certain length, the craftsman will give it the finishing touches.
